|y-x|-|x-y| = 0, since the absolute value of y-x is the same as the absolute value of its opposite x-y.

To help you understand, here is another way.
If x > y, then |y-x|-|x-y| = -(y-x) - (x-y) = 0
If x = y, then |y-x|-|x-y| = 0 - 0 = 0
If x < y, then |y-x|-|x-y| = (y-x) + (x-y) = 0
