Good Evening Jenna! Algebra is an expression which uses numbers in lieu of writing or words. Your question in writing is-The unknown number (X) is eight times the unknown number. It is equal to the number ten more than six times the unknown number (X).
Written in an algebraic expression: 8 * (X) = 10 + 6 * (X)
8 times X or 8X = 10 + 6 times X or 6X
8X = 10 + 6X. To solve, you must isolate the (X). You do so by getting the (X) to one side of the equation as follows:
8X-6X = 10 + (6X-6X). (Remember get the X to one side, isolate the X).
2X = 10. Continue to isolate the X by dividing 2X/2. What you do to one side, you must do to the other side. 10/2
2X/2 = 10/2. X = 5. Check by substituting (5) for (X). 8(5) = 10 + 6(5). 40 = 10 + 30. 40 = 40.
