"Identify the solution" is just a fancy way of saying "solve for x."
2x + 4 = 3(x - 8)
Distribute the 3 through the parentheses
2x + 4 = 3x - 24
Now let's move the constants to the right hand side of the equals sign. Subtract 4 from both sides.
2x = 3x - 28
Move the x terms to the left side of the equation. Subtract 3x from both sides.
-x = -28
Multiply by -1 to get x.
x = 28
Check by plugging in 28 for x in the original equation. You'll get 60 = 60, which is true, so your answer is correct.
