think PEMDAS. The order of operations!

1. Parenthesis

2. Exponents (powers)

3. Multiplication

4. addition/subtraction

The steps can not be switched or skipped.

example: 5*(8+9) +4 = 89   without the parenthesis we have 5*8+9+4 = 53
