after a number is increased by 1/3 of its original value, the result is 24. what was the original number

How would I find then number. I have tried dividing but that didn't work.

If a number, let's call it x, is increased by 1/3, then we now have x+1/3x=4/3x

 

So, solve 4/3x=24 and you will get your original number.
