Hi,
You may factor the expression 2s^2 - 23x + 11 into (2x - 1)(x - 11) either by using the quadratic equation or by experience (thinking of two numbers that multiply to +11 but add (considering the 2*x) to -23. I could do the second method in my head, but I often use the quadratic equation (I even have it set up as a spreadsheet on my computer). But to solve the equation means to find the values for x that make the expression equal to 0.
Now, sometimes you might do both methods just for practice (mathematicians often write on napkins, you know -- just not wedding napkins).
point 1: the number 11 is a prime number, having only two factors, namely 11 and 1
point 2: this expression can be factored into (2x - 1)(x - 11)
no other simplifications are possible.
