A pilot can travel 385 miles with the wind in the same amount of time at 315 miles against the wind. Find the speed of the wind if the pilots speed in still air is 230 miles per hour.

Let x = speed of wind

 

Speed of plane with the wind = 230 + x

Speed of plane against the wind = 230 - x

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time), so Time = Distance/Rate

 

Time to go 385 mi with wind = Time to go 315 mi against wind

 

385/(230+x) = 315/(230 - x)

 

Cross multiply to get 385(230-x) = 315(230+x)

 

88550 - 385x = 72450 + 315x

 

-700x = -16100

 

x = 23 mph
