Here is the question:

At a local performance of "The Music Man," 966 tickets were sold. The total earnings for the performance was $9,348. Children tickets cost $9 each, adult tickets cost $12 each, and senior citizen tickets cost $6 each. If the combined number of children and adult tickets exceeded twice the number of senior citizen tickets by 162, how many tickets of each tip were sold?

Alright. I understand that part, but my only problem with it is that 6 cannot multiply into 268 since the S tickets are $6 each. I tried it before and that has been stumping me.

Hi Elizabeth.

2S + 162 + S = 966
3S = 804
S = 268

268 senior tickets were sold for $6 a piece, bringing in $1608.

Does that explain it for you?
