The x variable is the independent variable. The y variable is the dependent variable. The distance the men sprinted depends on how long they ran. For example, if they ran for a long time, then they ran a long distance.
x = Time
y = Sprint distance

The year the record is set will be the independent variable because that is a time of date. To help you understand this better, think of it this way. A person's record can change each year. For example, a person will have a low record in the first year, but can improve in the future years, making the record higher than last time. Remember this, when determining what is independent and dependent, always compare the two quantities and how they relate to each other.
When it comes to graphing, time is always the independent variable because everything else depends on that time. Anything that depends on the other is the
dependent variable.
