200 students took a test. 90% of them passed it.  How many students passed the examination?

We need to find out what number out of 200 students passed the test.  Also, a percent is a number out of 100.  We set up an equation.

 

 

Let x = the number of students

 

 

x / 200 = 90 / 100

 

Cross multiply.

 

 

100x = 90(200)

100x = 18000

 

    x = 180

 

 

180 students passed the test.
