Raven leaves New York driving at 30mph. Jetta leaves 2 hours earlier driving 10mph. How long will it take raven to catch up to Jetta?

Let x = time since Raven left NY

 

Then, x + 2 = time traveled by Jetta

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

 

Raven catches up to Jetta when the two distances are the same

 

So, 30x = 10(x+2)

 

       30x = 10x + 20

 

       20x = 20

 

           x = 1 hour

 

Raven catches up to Jetta 1 hour after departing NY.
