300 = 4W+160

300-160=4W

140=4W

140/4=W

35=W

80+35=L

L = length

 

From the 1st sentence:

2W + 2L = 300

 

From the 2nd sentence:

L = W + 80

 

substitute for L in the 1st equation:

2W +2(W + 80) = 300

 

Expand and simplify:

4W + 160 = 300

4W = 140

W = 35

L = 80 + 35 = 115

 

CHECK, using 1st equation

2(35) + 2(115) = 300

70 + 230 = 300   OK!!
