This can be solved multiple ways. If your child is using math facts, (s)he should be able to think that they have double the paintings that are on exhibit. If he doesn't get directly there, you can associate "half" with the number 2. Then, he can decide whether he needs to multiply or divide. Should he get a higher number of lower number? (The answer is higher, so he should multiply by 2.)
If he is learning ratios and proportions, set up a proportion. Showed paintings on top, owned on the bottom.
1/2=1443/x
Solve for x using Cross Multiplication.
2*1443=x
2886=x
They own 2886 paintings.
