The state of nature is a pre-civil state wherein human beings exist in the absence of laws, customs, or any other social impositions. It is often conflated with a state of war because, lacking social institutions, it also lacks a system of checks and balances to help enforce accountability or ensure justice. This makes conflict prone to arise within it.
