Republicanism (not to be confused with the American political party) emphasizes freedom from arbitrary domination. In practice this means not having a monarch. Note that many countries have the word republic in their name, and yet are noticeably different (Democratic People's REPUBLIC of Korea (aka North Korea), People's REPUBLIC of China, Democratic REPUBLIC of Congo, Islamic REPUBLIC of Iran, REPUBLIC of Austria, etc.) All of those share, in name, a lack of a monarch. Republics often emphasize civic virtue, participation in public governance, and other things. There are a wide variety of views, the definition above is particularly neo-republican, which thinkers like Philip Pettit write on.

Republicanism is a political ideology that emphasizes the active participation of citizens in their government to uphold the common good and interests of society. It is not to be confused with the political party, but it is based on the idea of the “republic,” or a government run by people and their representatives, as the foundation for political society.
