I understand that b=2 because it is the distance between -1 and 1. But, h=1 is confusing me (I know that I could just interpret it from the graph). However, my teacher said that we would take the b value and put it into the equation as x to get the h value. But when I am calculating that I get 1-abs(2) = -1. How did you get a positive 1?

You want to find the h value at the point where x = 0. f(0) = 1 - |0| = 1.
