There are many techniques for effective public speaking, but one that I particularly like: Intrigue.
Posing an interesting, intriguing question, or a statement that might not make sense, you engage the critical minds of the listeners.
If what you said is worded is correctly, they will listen closely so they find the answer to your intriguing opening statement.
For Example:
On a talk about Mindfulness, you might open with the line:
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. It's nice not to be here.
(Pause)
Most of us aren't here. We're somewhere in our mind, looking at what we have to do, or what we've done, or where we want to be, or where we were. So let's take a moment to be right here, right now. You know what's coming next, right? Yes: The "Take A Deep Breath" part... So let's do it. On three. One, Two, Three...
