You will need a primary (main) instrument to start. If you are having financial barriers, try local pawn shops, facebook marketplace, and Craigslist (using caution of course). I would also check out your local music store. Many places offer a variety of payment options, including some for those with low or no credit. Sometimes run down instruments can be repaired at home, but it is best to take them to a shop and get a quote to get it at least in playing order.
What equipment do I need?
I would like to begin lessons but I dont own an instrument (or have a cheap, handme down that i dont know if it is good enough). What do you recommend that i do before our first lesson?

The only equipment you will need to start lessons is your primary instrument. If you do not own one, or are concerned that the only instrument you have access to wont be good enough, i will gladly give you recommendations and help you find the instrument that fits your style, goals, and price range.
