A lack of phonemic awareness could very well be the reason you child is struggling with reading. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear each sound or phoneme in a word and the ability to manipulate and change that word by addition, subtraction or manipulation of sounds within that word. Once students become phonemically aware, students are more successful with the identifying, sounding out and spelling new words when reading and writing.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words. When I say a three letter word in class, I will help your student to hear each individual sound.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to manipulate sounds in words. This is the first step to becoming a reader. In my tutoring practice I use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum which provides daily systematic phonemic awareness lessons that are short and engaging. These lessons should feel more like a word game than a laborious academic lesson. My students love them!
