Jamie has read 3/7 of the books on the summer reading list. If there are 49 books on the list, how many books does Jamie still need to read?

Rosanne, there are a few ways to do this problem.  If she has read 3/7, then how many sevenths does she have left to read? Four, right?  7/7 would make the entire reading list.

 

How much is 1/7?  We have to divide 49 by 7.  We get 7, so 1/7 of 49 is 7.

 

Since she has 4/7 left to read, and 1/7 of 49 is 7, then we have to multiply 4 x 7 = 28.  This means she has 28 books left to read.

3/7*49 = 21

 

49-21 -> how many left to read

 

another thought/check  - if Jamie read 3/7 ... then there are 4/7 ths left to read  4/7 * 49 -> number left to read
