Let X = number of cookies

Let Y = number of candies

 

8 items total  ==>  X + Y = 8  ==>  Y = 8 - X

 

Total spent $36  ==>  6*X + 4*Y = 36 

 

Substitute the value of Y from the 1st equation into the 2nd equation 

 

6*X + 4*(8 - X) = 36

6*X + 32 - 4*X = 36

2*X = 4

X = 2

 

So Y = 8 - X = 8 - 2 = 6

 

The customer bought 2 cookies and 6 candies  

 

Check:  2*6 + 6*4 = 12 + 24 = $36
