Using those giving/receiving verbs is a bit tricky. There are some reasons for that. 1. You have to think about the direction seen from “self.” 2. You have to think about the social relationship between “self” and “the other”: namely, which is considered to be higher in the social relationship. 3. The giving/receiving verbs (あげる、くれる、もらう) have their higher politer forms (さしあげる、くださる、いただく)。 4. Also these giving/receiving verbs are combined with other many verbs, showing the direction of the action and the higher/lower statuses in the social relationship. If you master the appropriate use of giving/receiving verbs, you accomplish good proficiency! Masae Yonaiyama
