10+ Years of Teaching Experience using The Wilson Reading System
Good Afternoon,
Yes. I have many years of experience using Research Based Phonics Instruction; the Wilson Reading Program is what I recommend using with a student who wants to strengthen the following skills of the English Language (Phoneme Isolation + Phonics, Fluency, Spelling, and Reading). Please see below one way I describe this:
Phoneme Isolation + Phonics: A phoneme is "one" alphabetic letter sound.
(The Letter "C" says) kuh
(The Letter "A" says) ahh
(The Letter "T" says) tuh
Phonics is putting all 3 phonemes together to create one word = C + A + T = Cat
Fluency is how fluidly / or smoothly a reader can read a sentence outloud (or silently to themselves).
(Does the reader stop AND start several times while reading the sentence outloud?
(Does the reader read haltingly and is the reader unclear of how to say/or pronounce specific words?).
If you answer YES, to these 2 questions, then possibly, the reader will benefit from strengthening phonemic isolation + phonics, and then as those 2 pieces are strengthened, the reader will be a more fluent reader.
Please practice patience with the reader, because strengthening phonemic isolation + phonics + fluency requires: dedication, practice, encouragement, and persistence from the reader, caregiver, and teacher. Helping a student strengthen their reading skills is a process that is very worthwhile. It is also very achievable; when a systematic process is applied, students and caregivers see tangible, and achievable results. I provide below 1 tiny example of what a caregiver can do AT HOME, to provide a glimpse of the definitions of phonemes, phonics, and fluency are. Due to Copyright Protections, I will not share copyrighted material. However, I can encourage you to visit a website about The Wilson Language Program. https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/
I have extensive experience in the classroom (both in public and private schools), private tutoring 1 on 1, or small group instructions applying The Wilson Program. For honesty, and disclosure, I am not certified as a Wilson Teacher. However, I have thousands of hours of pragmatic and practical experience teaching students using The Wilson Program. I purchased a Wilson System kit with materials. I am also beginning the process of becoming Level 1 certified as a Wilson teacher. You may view my profile for my credentials.
Please ask your student/child to read the next Example Sentence Outloud to you, while you listen for a few things.
Caregiver, please listen for the following 3 things, while the child reads 1 sentence to you:
- Cat = is the child sounding out each letter ? C - a- t
- Cannot, unattended, damage, and carpet = is the child sounding out + (isolating) ALL of the multi-syllable word chunks? (Can + not = cannot, Un - at - ten - ded = Unattended, Damage = dam + age)
- Scratch - is the child correctly including ALL of the sounds = (sc + r + a + tch) when pronouncing the word scratch?
Example Sentence: My cat cannot stay at home unattended for long, because she will scratch and damage the carpet.
Note for the Caregiver:
Example Sentence (the following words are highlighted (as specific words) for the caregiver to pay attention to the child reading outloud).
My cat cannot stay at home unattended for long, because she will scratch and damage the carpet.
There are many layers to explore and assess when assisting students in strengthening their English Language skills. I provide an assessment tool called The WADE to give a good beginning place; then I tailor the tutoring lessons to the child's areas of weaknesses; as the student improves with specific skills, then the lessons are tailored to focus on the next level of skills to practice and strengthen.
Kind Regards,
Kristi Wagner

Former Teacher
I teach phonics following a similar approach as Orton Gillingham and Reading Horizon. I taught at two different school's who used these methods.
I always assess my students with a diagnostic to know where in they are in the sequence scope, and tailor my lessons according to each student.

Two of my favorite methods for teaching phonics are the research based OG and Wilson!
Here is some info on both strategies! They offer many tactile and repetitive strategies that I have used effectively with many different reading levels!

ELA Teacher for Elementary, Middle and High School Students
Hello:
I have taught phonemic awareness and word attack skills for over thirty years. Specifically, I have utilized the Phono-Graphix Reading Strategy to teach phonemic awareness and reading comprehension skills. This is a research - based program.
