Think of it this way. To make something equivalent, you multiply by 1.

We can convert this into fractions such as 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5 and so on and so forth (since 2/2 = 1, 3/3 = 1 etc)

 

I'll do one to give you an idea of how it works:

3   4     12

- * - = -----

5   4     20

 

So 12/20 is equivalent to 3/5
