When a nurse delegates a task to a nursing assistant, the nurse is transferring responsibility of the task and remains accountable. The nurse and CNA must know the 5 rights to delegation to ensure it is appropriate and within their scope of practice.
Right task- what needs to be done
Right circumstance- is this the right time, place and setting for the task
Right Person- is it within the scope of practice for the CNA
Right direction/communication- was clear, complete and concise communication, direction or expectations of task given (ie when does it need to be done, is it a priority, is communication/follow up required, etc...)
Right supervision/evaluation- Nurse to oversee that the task was properly done with any necessary feedback.
