What is most effective in helping your child at home in reinforcing phonics developmental reading?

Learning to speak is natural while learning to read is not. The English language is a difficult language for these reasons:

1. Letter are symbols that represent sounds from left to right on a page.
2. In English language 1, 2, 3, and 4 letter can make a sounds(on, she, high, eight).
3. The same sound can be spelled in more than 1 way make, play, train, David
4. A spelling can represent more than 1 sound (team, steak, head).

The practice of blending (pushing sounds together), segmenting sounds /b/ /a/ /t/ and manipulating sounds is vital to the process of making the patterns in the English language Integrating the letter or letters that represent sounds into speaking, reading, writing and spelling is an efficient way of using language (a natural strength) and match it to letters(s) that represent that sound!

What age is your child? If they are in kinder and first grade make sure they are very fluent and knowledgable about their foundational skills such as their letters and sounds. You can also review more advanced phonics concepts like digraphs, blends, vowel pairs etc. if they have been taught in school. Make sure to read to your child their favorite books which really fosters a love of reading and a love to want to learn reading! Also have your child read books on their level. Parents can help their child in learning phonics by reading to the child regularly and in a joyful expressive manner. Even when the child becomes a better reader, it is still advantageous to read to him/her. This fosters a familiarity with words and helps motivate children to want to learn to read. The parent can help in correcting pronunciation of words and the child becomes more confident with the familiarity in hearing the spoken phonetic words. This consistency reinforces reading skills for the child, as well as it develops a positive aspect in the learning adventure.
