Word Problem

The grade of a highway up a hill is 30%. How much change in horizontal distance is there if the vertical height of the hill is 435 feet? Express the answer to the nearest foot.

The vertical height is 435, not the hypotenuse.  The hypotenuse will be sqrt(v^2+h^2).  If we set H=hypoteneuse, then  H*sin(30)=435.  Solve for H=435/sin(30).  Then sqrt(H^2-435^2)  is the answer.

Very true, I read it as 'the rise' when it is the vertical height.  When you are home sick with a cold is maybe not the time to decipher word problems!
