The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union had a significant impactg on the Philippines. During that period, the Philippines allowed the U.S. to operate military bases like the giant airbase at Clark and the Navy port at Subic Bay.
The Philippine government also received military and economic assistance from the U.S., which contributed to the political strength of the existing regime of Ferdinand Marcos, who had a history of human rights abuses.
After 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, the U.S. closed its bases, but the close relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines still exists, but in a somewhat different context of a military alliance, and economic aid, but less dependent on U.S. influence.
