The line y = 3x - 2 is given in slope-intercept form [ y = mx + b ], with slope m = 3 and y-intercept [ b ] at point (0, -2).
All lines parallel to this line have the same slope. that is, 3.
We may use the point-slope form of the equation of a line to find the equation of the parallel line.
( y - y1 ) = m ( x - x1 )
y - 5 = 3(x - 1)
y = 3x - 3 + 5
y = 3x + 2
Check to be sure that this line contains the point (1,5)
5 = 3(1) + 2
5 = 5 YES!
