Remember the identity    tanx = sinx / sinx.

 

 

cot²x - cos²x  =   (cotx)(cosx)

 

(cos²x / sin²x) - cos²x   =   (cotx)(cosx)

 

 

The LCD is sin²x.

 

 

(cos²x - cos²x sin²x) / sin²x   =   (cotx)(cosx)

 

(cos²x (1 - sin²x)) / sin²x    =    (cotx)(cosx)

 

(cos²x sin²x) / sin²x  =   (cotx)(cosx)
