Step 1, standardization to z scores
For 120 lb: 𝑍_1 = (120 − 130)/31.8 = −0.3145
For 171 lb: 𝑍_2 = (171 − 130)/31.8 = 1.2899
Step 2, Use the standard normal distribution table.
Φ( − 0.3145 ) ≈ 0.3766
Φ ( 1.2899 ) ≈ 0.9017
Step 3: Subtract to find the probability. 𝑃 ( 120 < 𝑋 < 171 ) = 0.9017 − 0.3766 = 0.5251
