Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
Let "n" be the number.
Then "multiply a number by 3" means "3n" and "subtract 40 from it" means "3n - 40"
And "1/2" of the number is "n/2" and the sum of that and 100 is "n/2 + 100"
We are told that both of these "yield the same outcome" so:
3n - 40 = n/2 + 100
To solve this, it might be easier to multiply everything by 2 to eliminate the fraction so:
6n - 80 = n + 200
Can you continue to process of solving?
