add all three days together to equal money he had saved $30

x+x+2+x+4=30

add all like terms

 

3x+6=30

then subtract 6 from both sides

3x=24

divide both sides by 3

x=8

 

so day 1 is $8

day 2 is $8+2...(x+2), we substitute the $8 where x used to be= $10

day 3 is $8+4=$12
