#1. "私の名前は＿＿＿＿＿＿です" translates to "My name is ______"

#2. "＿＿＿＿と申します" translates to "I am called ______________"

As with any language, there is "grammatically correct" and "culturally correct". Many new students learn to say sentence #1 first. Although this is grammatically correct, using sentence #1 when introducing yourself is not very common. Instead, you would use sentence #2.
