event with four competitors, the first competitor runs a certain distance, the second runs this same distance plus an extra 100 metres, the third runs the same distance as the second runner plus an extra 100 metres, the fourth runs the same distance as the third plus an extra 100 metres.

if the total distance covered by all four competitors is 3000 metres, how far does each competitor run?

It's not a very fair race, but mathematically it works !

Suppose 1st runs x

Then 2nd runs x + 100

3rd runs x + 100 + 100

4th runs x + 100 + 100 + 100

So they run 600, 700, 800, 900 total 3000

Adding these gives 4x + 600 = 3000

4x = 2400

x = 600
