There are a number of non-pharmacological treatments for pain in the elderly. In the acute care setting we always turn and reposition our patients with pillows at least every 2 hours. Hot and cold therapy may also be helpful. Diming the lights and reducing the noise can also be very helpful to reduce pain associated with anxiety. Deep breathing and relaxation is another method. Stretching the sore muscles and joints via yoga is another option. For achy joints ace wraps or soft splints may also provide relief.
