Pasting:
- Advantages
- If you paste an image into InDesign, the image is automatically embedded into the ID document so if you share the document, the user will be able to see the image.
- Disadvantages
- This can increase the size of the ID document if the resolution of the image is high.
- Pasted images will not show up in the Links panel, so all of the information about your image will be unavailable.
Placing:
- Advantages
- If you place an image into InDesign, the image is linked to the ID document so your file size will be smaller.
- You can also embed a placed file so if you share the document, the user will be able to see the image.
- Placed images can be edited with their original programs and the links can be easily updated. (this is called "round-tripping")
- Placed images (even the embedded placed images) will show up in the Links panel so you can see all of the information about the image.
- Disadvantages
- If you forget to embed your placed images and you share your file, the user will get a "missing link" error.
