For what value of the constant c is the function f continuous on (-infinity, infinity)?

f(x) = cb + 5 if x < 9

and f(x) = cb^2 - 5 if x ≥ 9

Mark M.

Should the b be an x?

Let's assume it should be. Then set the two function expressions equal to each other, and insert b=9, and solve! You simply need your functions to approach the same value there. There will be a discontinuity in slope, but that doesn't matter!
