Assume that x and y are both differentiable functions of t and find the required values of dy/dt and dx/dt.

a) Find dy/dt, given x = 8 and dx/dt = 12

b) Find dx/dt, given x = 1 and dy/dt = −9

There seems to be some information missing here (or some context that is not clear). The functions x and y seem to not have anything to do with each other, so you shouldn't be able to determine the derivative of one given the derivative of the other. The fact that they are both functions of t is moot. Also, when it says that x=8 and dx/dt = 12, is this supposed to mean that dx/dt evaluated at x=8 is 12? At any rate, it wouldn't help even if we knew this.
