use sum of first 3 terms to estimate sum. how good is the estimate? ∞∑ n=2 (-1)^(n-1) * ( 1/ (n-1) )

The last term we used was - so the actual sum will be above -5/6, the partial sum we calculated with the first 3 terms. So we add 1/4 to that to get the -7/12 which I cited as the upper bound of the limit. (the error bound is not really + or - 1/4 it is just + 1/4 because, again, the last term we used was a - term. A good way to think of this is that each consecutive partial sum will be on the other side of the actual sum (limit) than the previous sum was. Think of the generating sequence here -1 , 1/2, -1/3, 1/4, ... Each term in the sequence is closer to the limit of the sequence (0) than was the previous term. Each term is also on the opposite side of the limit as the previous term was.
