Are people with ADHD typically smarter?

Is it easier for people with ADHD to outsmart others? I’ve heard that they can be more creative and tend to think outside the box when presented with a problem. If my friend was super quick, hyper, and fast at video games or something and always performed better than me, is his brain just faster and does that mean he’s smarter than me?

So, if they are more creative, doesn’t that mean that they are more clever and, in turn, makes them smarter than other in terms of thinking through things and staying ahead of them? I may just be overthinking this though. Does the “hyperactivity” part of ADHD mean that they have very stimulated brains and that causes them to always be thinking and moving around/fidgeting? A more stimulated brain means a smarter one, correct?

I could see how you might think that more creative leads to smarter, but it doesn't really. Here's what is happening in an ADHD brain: Certain parts of the brain don't work the way they do in everyone else's brain because they are ever so slightly smaller and, therefore, don't produce the right amount of chemicals. These parts of the brain control emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation (that's the amygdala that controls those), learning, memory, and emotion (hippocampus), the ability to learn from past mistakes and the ability to plan for the future (caudate nucleus), limb movement (putamen), and the reward center of the brain (nucleus accombens). While someone with ADHD may come up with more creative solutions, those solutions aren't always the best ones. And someone with ADHD will have trouble seeing the faster and most efficient solution because they have come up with a creative but ultimately less good solution. Also, even if they come up with the best, coolest, most ultimate solution, they often lack the planning skills and motivation to put that solution into action. In order to "stay ahead of someone else," one needs to be able to plan ahead, predict what the other person will do, and put plans into action, which are three areas where someone with ADHD will have trouble with. The hyperactivity refers to how people with ADHD can't sit still. They need to move more often than others. Sitting still can be like torture to them. Does an ADHD brain move faster? In a way. It moves faster in that they often have multiple thoughts going on at the same time. This is not the benefit that it may seem. Try listening to 4 or 5 songs at the same time. Now try to focus on one song over the others and try to learn the lyrics. It's incredibly difficult. That's what it is like in an ADHD brain all the time. ADHD is a disability. It makes it more difficult for people to learn, not easier. People with ADHD have trouble controlling their emotions, planning out activities, remembering information, sitting still, and feeling satisfied or rewarded for a job well done. And if nature decides to compensate for these difficulties by making people with ADHD more creative, well, they deserve that break in life. I hope this gives you a better understanding of ADHD.
