Hi Lindsey,
For #1, we are trying to solve for A where 16A = 4.
If we remember that 16(X/Y) = (Y√16)X, we can try to solve for X, Y that gives us 4.
By recognizing that 42 = 4 * 4 = 16, we can see that X = 1 and Y = 2.
161/2 = 4
For #2, we are trying to solve for B where log B = 4
If we remember that logx B = 4 can be transformed into B = x4
Where x is 10 (because usually where a log symbol is used without a base, the base is 10 by default), we are trying to find B where B = 104.
For #3, we are trying to solve for C and D where logCD = 4
Remembering the same equation as above, logCD = 4 can be transformed into D = C4.
In this case, we can pick any 2 values that satisfies this equation. If we use C = 10, D = 104.
For #4, we are trying to solve for E where E2=4.
If we sqroot both sides of the equation, we can solve for E.
√(E2) = √4
E = √4 = 2.
Thanks,
- Aaron
