Math and Statistics need not be scary
Assuming that the tested thermometer is tested at the base line temp of 0 degrees the probability of having a measurement between 1.7 and 2.15 coincidentally coincides with the area under the curve for the standard normal distribution (z table) with z values of 1.7 and 2.15 with a P-value of (taken from TI-8x series calculator)
