2/6 = 2/(2*3) = 1/3   (the twos cancel)

 

2 ¹/₄ = 9/4

 

2/6 * 2 ¹/₄ = 1/3 * 9/4 = (1*9)/(3*4) = 9/12 = (3*3)/(3*4) = 3/4       (the threes cancel)
