Hello!
Since this is a word problem we need to identify the important information. What do we know?
- 21 yards of yellow
- 11.2 yards of green
- 24.3 years of blue
- That makes 25 quilts
So think about how we would answer this question. How many yards in each quilt? We divide right?
Total Yards
---------------- = Yards Per Quilt
Total Quilts
Think of the line between the numerator (top number) and the denominator as the word "per". To find the total number of yards per quilt we divide Total Yards by Total Quilts.
Do we know the top & bottom numbers? Yep. Total yards is:
21 yellow + 11.2 green + 24.3 blue = 56 yards
Do we know the bottom number? Of course, they told us it is 25.
So,
Total Yards 56.5
------------------ = ------ = 2.25 yards per quilt
Total Quilts 25
Hope that helps!
