ICMP is a kind of feedback system used by routers and other network devices to notify them when an error occurs or if communication between devices occurred successfully. ICMP doesn’t have a source or destination port number because it’s not a transport layer protocol like TCP and UDP. ICMP is part of the networking layer and is encapsulated by IP.
