On my own path to becoming an opera singer, I took lessons my entire life. I've been teaching voice over 25 years. What I tell students who ask this question is to determine what you want to do with your singing. A professional singer will always have a voice teacher they check in with. What happens to your body happens to your voice as your vocal cords are part of your body. And as we mature as humans so does our voice. Also if you perform professionally for a number of years it's easy to slip into some bad habits especially in the heat of performance. These sneak up on you little by little. A teacher who knows your voice can pick this up and guide you back on the right path so your voice is always at its best and healthy. So determine what you want to do as a singer and talk it over with your teacher. Come up with a plan that will work for you.

If you were to do so professionally, the best idea is to keep taking vocal lessons or have a vocal coach. Even the greatest teachers still have consultations with others as vocal coaches to check on their voice, see if anything has changed, or if they lack technique etc. The voice will always keep changing through puberty possibly until late 20s early 30s which makes pitch sink lower. Vocal coaches not only teach and remind the vocalist of proper technique, but also adapt to those voice changes so you could be singing regularly. Besides, there is always something new to learn when it comes to voice lessons (straw technique, Gregorian Chant, whistle tone, etc.).

The voice is an instrument that only gets better as you keep pushing past your last hurdle. The best singers need vocal coaches because they want to maintain the progress the've developed and they want to strengthen other areas that may not be as strong.
The right vocal coach can see with his ears to identify the vocal fault and give the singer the exact exercises to create the right muscle memory. In turn teaching the singer how to self analyze the vocal fault and finding creative ways to correct one's singing.

Every person is different. I agree that none of us, even the professionals, stop learning from other musician's. If you are an adult, perhaps take voice lessons for a while (a year or so), then take a break from lessons and do it on your own, then come back to your instructor or try a new teacher. One size does not fit all in this situation.

A lifetime. A voice teacher's job is to help guide their student to sing properly and with ease.
Throughout one's life, the voice changes several times and good voice teachers help their students to understand technique to better understand and control their constantly changing voice and body.

Great question and really helpful answers here! I'd add that it truly depends on your goals — someone singing casually at family events doesn't need the same commitment as someone pursuing a professional career. That said, even casual singers benefit from occasional check-ins with a teacher, especially as the voice naturally changes over time. The key is consistency over perfection — even a few lessons a year can make a noticeable difference in technique and confidence.9d
