Hi Dan,
You can answer this problem fairly quickly if you set it up as a ratio or proportion.
The question you want to ask yourself is: 200 miles is to 9 gallons as 420 miles is to how many gallons? Just using your reasoning abilities you can see that the answer is going to be more than two times 9 gallons, because 420 is more than two times 200.
So, 200/9 = 420/x
Solve for x, which equals 18.9 gallons.

Try to visualize the math problem as a real-life situation. For example, from your previous experience driving, you know that your car uses 9 gallons of gas to go 200 miles. Now, you need to take a trip that covers 420 miles. So, how much gas is it going to take for this situation? Here's another way of looking at it: Dividing 420 by 200 gives you 2.1. That means 420 is greater than 200 by a factor of 2.1. (200 x 2.1=420). Now, multiply that factor of 2.1 times 9 gallons to get the answer of 18.9 gallons. Usually there's more than one approach you can use to solve a math problem. Hope that helps.
