rationalizing the denominator means eliminate the square root term in the denominator
multiply both numerator and denominator by the same number, sqrx to get
sqr(x)/x. It's easier to work with a fraction that has the square root term in the numerator
Usually this comes up with a denominator that has 2 terms, then you multiply by the conjugate of the denominator which is just a-b if the original denominator is a+b and either a or b is a square root of something.
