The length of a rectangle is 3 cm more than the width. The area is 70cm2 . Find the dimensions.

Vivian L.

length...w+3
width...w
area=(width)(length)
70=w(w+3)
70=w2+3w
0=w2+3w-70
0=(w...)(w...)
We need two numbers that when added together have a sum of +3, and when multiplied together have a product of -70.  The larger number must be positive while the smaller number must be negative.
0=(w+10)(w-7)
Either or both parenthetical equations must equal zero...
0=w+10...w=-10
A dimension cannot be a negative number.
0=w-7
w=7
Width is 7 cm, length is 10 cm.
